However it is very difficult to implement technology as the only form of output and these students are generally expected to develop their handwriting to a basic functional level if possible. This program also has the capacity to assist these students to develop functional handwriting skills.

Hold your pen the right way

Confidence in drawing and written output ability tends to develop further confidence and willingness to try new written tasks. In the crowded prep to year 3 curriculums there has become less and less time for teachers to devote to the task of handwriting.

When difficulties arise there is no time available to devote to remediation of handwriting. In addition handwriting will not be a priority if a student is experiencing reading and other academic difficulties. We are aware how difficult this can be in a busy classroom. There is a great deal of opportunity for parent involvement and information is shared in regard to parent roles at information nights.

Why is Teaching Handwriting so important? The production of written text requires a complex combination of higher level processing. A student will have a limited amount of working memory to give attention to the motor task of handwriting, content of the sentence, grammar and punctuation, spelling and genre etc.

If students are using their working memory to access the fundamental motor task of writing letters they will not then have enough working memory available for all the other higher level processing required for producing written text.

As you would be aware if a student is having difficulty with word recognition it will impact their reading accuracy and then their reading comprehension. If they are having difficulty recalling basic mental maths they will have difficulty learning advanced computational algorithms. In the same way problems with handwriting will result in a drain on mental resources required for higher level writing, such as organising ideas, expressing details, and attention to content.

Because handwriting is a basic tool used in many subjects poor handwriting can have a pervasive effect on school performance.
